Being the Organisation that sees to the affairs of Muslim Students on the campus of University of Ibadan , MSSNUI makes a clarion call to caution the members of the public and the media on issues surrounding the death of Shomuyiwa Azeezat, an alumna of the Post Graduate School, Department of Social works, Faculty of Education of the University of Ibadan.
The society worries about the spread of the unwelcome news. Hence, implores the masses and the media to stick to the official report by the Nigerian Police as against the rumoured rape and, stop spreading the deceased's picture.
In the broadcast released today, 6th of June 2020, MSSUI admonishishes the media and the members of the public to desist from hearsays that are related to the demise.
"However, since the advent of the news, some people have taken to spreading sorrowful lies to fit their evil narratives. Equally, some took their emotions beyond conscience by spreading the pictures of the deceased in her own blood thereby adding to the sorrow of concerned relatives and friends,"
The society's stance is on the report of the police.
"Firstly from a reliable source – The Nigeria Police Force says that "she was smashed with stone on her head". Any other narrative aside this should be outrightly discarded. The police are at the helm of the investigation, and promise to bring all the perpetrators to justice."
Having realised the evils behind spreading the half-naked picture of the lady who spent her life covering her nakedness, MSSNUI encourages the members of the public and the media to stop spreading the picture and protect the dignity that was protected while she was alive.
"Secondly, Sister Shomuyiwa Azeezat was, until her demise, a sister who would not want her pictures, even in her best outfit to fly around. As such, all are urged to, for posterity's sake, stop the spread of her picture – alive or dead."
Prior this realease, in the 34th special release of the University of Ibadan Students' Union, the union, through the President and the Public Relations Officer disclaims the news of rape as the cause of the death and affirms the cause to be a hit from a heavy stone.
In the end, the society reminds the public of the words of Allah as regards spreading rumour.
"Allah says: O you who believe! If an evil-doer comes to you with a report, look carefully into it, lest you harm a people in ignorance, then become regretful for what you have done.(Q49 – 06)"
