If I were you: is a statement used to imagine oneself in the position or situations of another person
Used to give advice
E.g., If I were him, I would have won the prize.
I would have gone to the doctor, if I were you.
I would be more diligent if were you.
So, how so?
It is so because it is used to show subjunctive mood of a hypothetical situation (i.e. indication that an act or state of being is possible or contingent, and not a fact.). It is so because it depicts a condition which is contrary to the fact (the fact is, I am not you, neither are you me).
NB: It is this same rule that rules wishes like:
If you became the president, what would be your first policy?
What would you do if you ruled the world?
