                                                                                          THE FUTURE OF NIGERIA
While we are really discussing about the Nigeria of today, have we really sat down to imagine what the tomorrow for Nigeria would be like. Gone are those days when the youth of the Nigerian society have lofty dreams both personal and societal, motivated then by the nationalist and inventors who had impacted positively on the course of humanity. The intellectual sagacity of the time was what produced great men in the history of Nigeria as of today. That generation was the generation of leaders who are inquisitive and are conversant with happenings around them.

Sorry to ask, have you ever engaged a typical youth on the streets of Nigeria today? Ask him what motivates him and he is likely to mention music, hip hop to be precise. He has hundreds of them downloaded on his phone. He can sing all of the meach with its dancing step off-hand. He knows all the singles and albums of Nice, WizKid, Davido, Tufaceetc., he did not even stop there he included the ones of Beyoncé, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent and others to his shelve. But ask him about the history of Nigeria and the current happenings around, that he is oblivious of. Ideas about nationalism, good society, and family responsibilities do not motivate him.

A youth of today is only interested in making money because his friend who does yahoo is rich and rides a good car, BMW or SUV. Things that interest him are things that do not have value. He has Google but never uses it for intellectual improvement but to download music, pornography and other inanities.

My fear for the tomorrow of Nigeria is that this generation of ours have since long been referred to as the leaders of “tomorrow” and our tomorrow would definitely come. When our tomorrow finally arrives, the generation of inanities would be the next leaders of Nigeria. Governors, Senators, Honourable and even the President belonged to the generation that does not care about morality, a generation that is only motivated by money and its acquisition.

I wonder what Nigeria would become in the nearest future and the far future because a bad hen would always produce a bad egg. I wonder where this country is heading to. I wonder where - these problems lie? Who is to be blamed for all these complications in our society? Is it the last generation, especially leaders of today who promoteinanities rather than intellectualism which they enjoyed during their youth or we the present generation who accept and prefer inanities to intellectualism?
